Toxic algae and poor water quality in water reservoirs

Project 1: Looking at how different strains of toxic cyanobacteria respond to environmental conditions. The aim is to provide tools for better prediction and monitoring of blooms.

Project 2: Focussed on the effect of future increases in carbon dioxide levels on algal growth and which species dominate in reservoirs.

Project 3: Looking at how aquatic plants can help to improve water quality by competing with algae for nutrients in reservoirs.

Sources and fate of nutrients from catchment to the coast

Project 1: Looks at how the condition of the catchments affects fisheries productivity. It is looking at Moreton Bay and Princess Charlotte Bay.

Project 2: Focussed on the sources and forms of nutrients being washed from the catchments into waterways and the effect on promoting algal blooms.

Aquaculture in developing countries

Project 1: In Vietnam, rice and shrimp are cultured in the same ponds with rice being grown in the wet season and shrimp (=penaeid prawns) in the dry season. This project is looking at ways of improving the sustainability of the systems.
